When you begin to think of constructing 55 buildings, the responsibility can be overwhelming. Then, when the reality of bringing positive change brings the picture into focus, the job is one that is truly an honor.

Building design meetings are taking place to ensure we review all options available for the best construction. Three items that are mutually agreed upon are: no concrete roofs, tin roofs only, and to use more wood for all construction. We are focused on designing a model that can be duplicated in multiple locations.

What is needed? Typically at each elementary school we have four classrooms and a church structure. We are now making positive changes by building smaller buildings which can flex better in case of any future earthquakes. We will separate the classrooms by constructing two-room buildings;

the church will be separate. The original clinic was located at BordMer, but we will now relocate the clinic to our Sigueneau property on the main highway. This will provide greater access for villages all across the Leogane Plain. In addition, we are constructing a miniclinic at each of our 22 elementary schools and will have a nurse on staff at each school location.

The timeline for all of this construction will take years. However, it is our goal to have the school buildings finished within 12 months so the school children do not have to meet in temporary facilities. New Missions has always built with excellent quality. We will build better, stronger, and with a greater dedication to those we serve. Thank you for partnering with us to build a new Haiti.

Special update from Charlie DeTellis in Haiti via telephone conversation with Tim DeTellis on Tuesday, February 9, 2010.

I had a 21minute phone conversation with Charlie DeTellis in Haiti. I told him how much we are praying for him and the Haitian leadership team with him at New Missions. Here is a summary of our phone conversation including photos from Charlie’s trip to Port-au-Prince.

Comments from Charlie during our phone call:
• Port-au-Prince is very slowly finding a new normal.

• More deaths are being reported as a result of post-earthquake related illnesses.
• Many roads are shut down in Port-au-Prince.

• Places of business such as supermarkets I once purchased from are totally gone.
• I have secured our cooking oil contact and purchased 800 gallons (200 cases) for $4,600.

• Our rice supplier is fine. However, his father died in the earthquake when a wall collapsed on him. I purchased 200 110 pound sacks of rice for $9,600. The cost is up a little—to $48 per sack. This is enough rice for nine school days. I will purchase more next week.

• Temporary buildings are going up at each school location where there was destruction. We have delivered school benches to schools where many were destroyed.

• Our schools are opening one by one. Pastor Guy will have a complete list shortly on the status of each location.

• The Christmas Shoeboxes were a huge blessing to our schools, as thousands of boxes were still in the warehouse when the earthquake hit. They have all been distributed.

• I have good relationship with the Marines and Navy here at our mission. They are still distributing MRE’s (meals ready to eat) through our schools and surrounding areas.

U.S. Marines at New Missions in Haiti moving pallets of food.

• The U.S. Military are helping with demolishing the destroyed buildings at New Missions. This is very helpful due to the risk of them collapsing. The Bordmer elementary school has been torn down, along with the medical clinic. The clinic is meeting in the church; the school will meet in the dining room temporarily. Eventually, we will build a temporary building closer to Neply.

• I am happy to be here. I was feeling overwhelmed at first. But now the first wave of regrouping has passed, and we are making progress each day.

It is overwhelming to see the destruction. However, our faith remains strong. ~Charlie DeTellis

Dear New Missions Family,

With great honor, I report that Charlie DeTellis in Haiti has a calling like never before. Our New Mission campus in Bordmer is base camp for the U.S. Navy and Marines. Through our mission, thousands of pallets of food and supplies for the Leogane region have been distributed.

Our school children are being fed and each of our schools are preparing to be open very soon. Temporary facilities are being constructed and our school directors and teachers are all in place at each location helping with this progress. On Tuesday, February 2, Charlie visited four of our elementary schools and churches: LaSalle, Marechal, TiBoukan, and Masson.

Charlie DeTellis in Haiti with the U.S. Navy Seabee’s at New Missions.

On Monday, February 1, Charlie was picked up via helicopter and visited the USS Bataan (LHD 5) and met with Captain Thomas M. Negus. Captain Negus expressed gratitude for New Missions welcoming the U.S. military to establish a base camp at our mission. While Charlie was on the ship he visited the medical ward and spoke with several Haitian patients receiving medical care. The U.S. Navy Seabees have partnered with us in the demolishing of buildings which were destroyed in the earthquake, and are helping to build temporary facilities.

The U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) Charlie DeTellis visited.

Continue to pray for:
1. Our Haitian leadership in Haiti at our churches and schools
2. Charlie DeTellis and the U.S. Military at New Missions
3. Continued financial support

Serving together,

In a unique way, we are pioneering again today. We raised the money for purchasing our first piece of land by collecting coins. Now, schools are hosting coin drives to raise money to help build new schools in Haiti. The U.S. military are staying in tents on the same land in Bordmer where we lived in tents back in 1983.

This is the hardest message for me to write. We have family members who died in the earthquake. They are five students of New Missions and one of our school teachers. Personally, I know the ministry of New Missions and the love of Jesus touched their lives. This tragedy hit close to home for my wife Sheryl and I. We were in Haiti when the earthquake happened. However, little did we know that Nadege Bertrand died in the earthquake. She was a graduate of New Missions, teacher at our Bordmer elementary school for the kindergarten class, and my wife was sending her to nursing school. She died in the nursing school when it collapsed in Leogane. We wept when we heard the news. She was a role model to many, and a shining example of how God can change a life. We now know she has met Jesus.

To each of the child sponsors who lost their child during the earthquake, my prayers are with you. These children are with Jesus, and I know they felt your prayers, love, and support over the years.

We remember these who died during the January 12, 2010 Haiti earthquake:

Manoucheka Calixte, age 20, from our Ambas-Pere church and elementary school. 05082

Duroucher Mickerlange, age 6, from our Signeau church and elementary school. 22302

Presumay Lovelie, age 12, from our Marechal church and elementary school. 15849

Sainthilus Leane, age 4, from our Brache-Gilles church and elementary school. 23785

Masse Kerrytoine, age 7, from our Brache-Gilles church and elementary school. 20471

Malise Valliere, age 20, from our Ambas-Pere church and High School. 03556

Nadege Bertrand, Kindergarten teacher at our Bordmer elementary school.

May we continue to pray for the children and families we serve in Haiti.

Serving together,

Right now in Haiti, the New Missions clinic is busier than ever. As you can imagine, in the aftermath of the earthquake, there are people injured and requiring care for wounds and fractures. Our entire Haitian staff at the clinic is working in temporary facilities outside our clinic building due to the earthquake damage to the building. We do have medical supplies on hand.

Today, this photograph was taken of Marie Chantal our medical clinic director and graduate of New Missions. She oversees our medical team in Haiti. Her personal story of how God rescued her is amazing. Please take the moment and watch her story online at http://www.mariechantalstory.com.

Please continue to pray for us. Our mission is fully engaged in serving our 9,000 students and their families. We anticipate that our schools will be functioning next week. Our school directors are at each location with our teachers organizing resources for temporary facilities to serve from.

Charlie DeTellis is in Haiti at New Missions and thankfully, the U.S. Marines and Navy is based at our mission. They have made New Missions their base camp for distributing food and supplies to the southern region of Haiti.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Update from Charlie DeTellis in Haiti at New Missions – we are waiting for more photos and will post them as soon as they arrive:

The tremors still continue. Last night, I was sleeping on the couch in my kitchen. There was another tremor and I ran out the door.

Today, a commander chief came a shore from one of the boats in the bay. He told me our landing station at New Missions has made it possible for them to set up several other stations along the coast. Basically they are moving all of their equipment through our compound. Today there were two landing crafts at the beach at the same time. There are 116 pallets of food they are distributing. This would equal six 40-foot containers.

Again, the landing crafts are bringing men, vehicles, and supplies. Many of the supplies are loaded in quarter size containers. Again, convoys of trucks are leaving our compound for other locations.

Today, the CBs (Construction Battalion) knocked down the school kitchen. I plan on knocking down the school building and the church next. These should be down a several days. I am currently looking at locating the BordMer elementary school and church in the village of Neply. I am talking with an owner who has .25 carreau of land. We would first build a temporary school building on this location. I have not heard the price yet.

School gifts are still being distributed.

Our clinic was full today.

All our schoolteachers have been paid.

Here is a report from Charlie DeTellis at New Missions in Haiti. Charlie has served in Haiti since our establishment in 1983. At our mission are 150 U.S. Marines and over 300 U.S. Navy personnel. They have made New Missions their base camp and are a strong support for our mission in serving our 9,000 children and 22 schools and churches.

Ready to eat meals are currently being distributed through our compound to the outlying community. A truck load pulled out of our compound at 7:00am this morning.

I have given authorization to the Navy CB’s (Construction Battalion) to demolish the BordMer elementary school building that was destroyed during the earthquake. First, the roof is coming off. We will be using those materials in building a temporary school.

Pastor Guy is delivering the balance of the Christmas shoeboxes to our schools today. Two military men went with pastor Guy for the distribution of gifts.

The mission nurses are in today and working on the clinic deck.

There are no security threats of any kind. Haitians do walk through the school yard to come and visit. The military does not mind this.
